Apr 11, 2020 I was similarly quite unhappy with my Nikon D800E camera – its AF system was a disaster with some lenses, particularly my Nikkor 24mm f/1.4G, 50mm f/1.4G and 85mm f/1.4G lenses, which never focused right even with modified AF Fine Tune settings. The new cameras will be the first to offer the option, but there is hope that Nikon will be able to usher in the feature to other camera models via a firmware update. Essentially the Auto AF fine tuning just cuts out a few steps of the tuning process, but it still requires you to set some ‘controls’ when using it.

By using a target that is full of information for the autofocus system to lock onto, as well as ensuring it is properly lit, you can properly fine tune your camera’s focus for different lenses.
Unfortunately, you can only set a single fine tune preference for each lens. So for zoom lenses that have a varying AF compensation value across their range, you’ll need to compromise and go for a mid-point.
